A stamp a day; Waxman-Marky Bill

June 28th, 2009 by TNM

Here are some sobering numbers to read in direct opposition of the CBO, what the Media is reporting, and EPA’s, warm fuzzy rhetoric, of the C/T bill amounting to *only* the price of a “postage stamp per day”:

My congressional District, already well below national median income will see on average, a Cap and Trade cost of living increase, of 500.00 dollars a year. In my neck of the woods, that’s a death knell for almost every small business owner in the area who already live on razor thin profit margins.

That’s a “stamp” costing well over a dollar per day.

We’ll let the “inconvenient truth” slide for a second that this once again makes Barak Hussein Obama A liar. Oh screw it, ignoring the obvious won’ make it go away.

Barak Huessien Obama is a two faced, backstabbing, snake in the grass LIAR.

And I quote…”95% of Americans will receive a tax cut”

LIES, DAMN LIES, AND MORE LIES, You can’t defend it, you can’t justify it, you can’t deny it. Those are his EXACT words, yet this Cap and Trade tax doesn’t target some bogey man “fat cat rich white guy”, this tax doesn’t target the evil Haliburton KBR, Dick Cheney Cabal, it doesn’t target rich liberals in NYC and LA.

    IT TARGETS YOU OBAMA VOTER.

500.00 Dollar electric bill just arrived? Little unsure just how you’re going to come up with that money?

How’s that feel pal? Not so good does it? Already out of work? Can’t pay the Electric bill this month, you better brace yourself, come 6 months from now you’ll be choosing between having electric for hot water and food for your children. You think the Utilities companies aren’t going to start hijacking rates early to protect themselves from this bullshit? No? You better think again.

Which incidentally, who is the nit wit mouth breathing moron that came up with that stamp a day garbage? I haven’t mailed a bill in over a decade, I pay everything including the US Governments extortion money, AKA taxes, online. My Parents as old fashioned as they may be, don’t use stamps much anymore, they have a computer, if they do it, I’m pretty sure 90% of Americans out there don’t buy a whole lot of stamps these days either. What alternate reality is that government drone living in?

Why do these lying weasels insist on trying to paint ‘purty pictures’ for the masses, and in doing so directly insult their intelligence? I wish I was standing with in striking range of that one, I really do, watching them pick their teeth up would give me great joy.

Alas, on to those numbers I mentioned, read em and weep…..This study was done by two PhD level Economists. And it appears on the Heritage Foundations Website

The Bill has passed the house, and is heading to the Senate. If this passes, we should be in the streets, armed to the teeth and looking for blood, enough is enough.

Sadly, as I watch the destruction of my homeland in utter dismay, my voice silenced, I lean ever closer and closer to the Militant. I think many Americans feel likewise, many are becoming unwilling to accept this governments actions, tolerate their abuses, nor will they continue to succumb to their vile agendas one more day.

It is an ever increasing worry, a nagging doubt that says; A point is rapidly being reached where negotiation and debate is no longer a viable alternative, we have no voice.

How many million Americans do not agree with the agenda being shoved down our throats by Obama and less than 1000 elected officials political elites, yet they refuse to listen?

So now, who are you going to believe?

(Strangely when I ask a Obama Supporter that very question, I get huffy nonsensical rhetoric).

Al Gore, with his souped up Power Point slide show and his claws in the carbon offset swindle, making him a wealthy man?

A political appointee of Obama’s in the CBO?

Another political appointee of Obama’s in the EPA?

Or the reality, the fact global warming is a farce, a myth concocted by radical environmentalists and Marxists?

In the end the “stamp a day” mentality is exactly what is wrong with our government, they have no qualms, none what so ever, of slapping additional burdens on the American people, they simply poo-poo it away with lofty rhetoric, and they refuse to understand that they are not by the constitution allowed to do so, they have no Legal right to do so, yet they do.

I have a choice to buy stamps, I choose not to, but with this bill I have no choice and sooner or later, when too many choices are taken away form the American people, there will be a reckoning, and I fear it will be bloody.

UPDATE **

The Bobo Files digs thru this abortion of a bill, and finds out, low income earners will get money, cash, shekles, call it what you will, placed directly into their bank accounts via the bill.

Worked and paid your electrical bills? Uncle Sam is going to take that money, and give it to the “poor”. In Cold hard Cash.

Still voting for the GOP?

June 25th, 2009 by TNM

Just asking because, well you know, they are so much like the Democrats Communists these days, that it is almost impossible to distinguish between the two any more.

The GOP is having an exceedingly bad ..well last couple months, but this last week is a disaster.

Of course I’mwrting about  the scandal involving Governor Mark Sanford of S.C.

It reads like a bad bad dime store novel, a mistress, flying around the globe, cheating on his wife, lying to cover it all up, hiding the facts from his staff, it just goes on and on and on.

But the worst of it, is the damage done to the movement in the country to push for lower taxes, and smaller and a less intrusive government.

Sanford, was the poster child for the fight against the Federal Government that is out of check, ignores the Constitution at every turn and is on the verge of turning America into a Euro-Socialist State. He was supposed to be the limited government candidate, and by some reports a contender for a conservative run in 2012.

With this scandal, Sanford, not only did he disgrace himself, he also gave the Party of the ass a nuclear warhead and he plopped down the coordinates for the smaller government movements headquarters, more or less saying “shoot here”.

Make no doubt about it, the D’s will use this as a battering ram to demonize the smaller government movement in this country.

They will point out endlessly with an all to willing media to spotlight the hypocrisy, the lies, the fact that the Republicans, read conservatives,  just can’t be trusted. How could they, they engage in gay sex in men’s bathrooms, cheat on their wives, and hire call girls…

It matters not that they do the same thing, Eliot Spitzer anyone? It only matters that they can now use this issue to point out how little the GOP is to be trusted on any domestic issue ranging from Family, Abortion, Taxes, or Healthcare. After all, our so called champion can’t even keep his pants up long enough to honor his wedding vows, how can we trust any other limited government GOP member?

And of course I can’t even begin to defend it, I’ve said it before, the GOP is not my party. They never will be again if they continue on in this manner.

No I don’t want to hear about compassion, about the human condition, about the frailty of the human pysche, especially from the GOP. The only thing the GOP should do is toss this guy out on his ear, and start targeting the rest of the weak links in the  the party, until every last RINO, and “bi-partisan” hack in their ranks is gone.

Until they do so, the GOP is going to keep getting hammered on election day, they will loose more seats, more State Houses, and more local positions.

There are polls out there that indicate 28% of the voting population is now “independent” I’d wager a large chunk of those are disgruntled conservatives like me. And they aren’t ever going to change their minds when it comes to shenanigans like this. They and I will continue to vote against the GOP.

Thanks Sanford, I hope that it was worth it you turncoat. You’re a disgrace.

We the people are coming….

June 19th, 2009 by TNM

This has been making the rounds across the blog-o-sphere, I found it over at The Liberty Zone

The DC crowd should take heed, tea parties, 53 year old grandmothers, it matters not, the people own this country…not the half wits in DC and their flunkies in the Media…

Hello Mr. Obama? Congress? Are you listening ?!? I think you damn well  better…

I’m a home grown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me.

Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me. There must be someone. Please tell me who you are. Please stand up and tell me that you are there and that you’re willing to fight for our Constitution as it was written. Please stand up now. You might ask yourself what my views and issues are that I would horribly feel so disenfranchised by both major political parties. What kind of nut job am I? Will you please tell me?

Well, these are briefly my views and issues for which I seek representation:

One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution. P.S., I’m not a racist. This isn’t to be confused with legal immigration.

Two, the TARP bill, I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway. I want the remaining unfunded 95% repealed. Freeze, repeal.

Three: Czars, I want the circumvention of our checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars. Government officials answer to the process, not to the president. Stop trampling on our Constitution and honor it.

Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There is more to say.

Five, universal healthcare. I will not be rushed into another expensive decision. Don’t you dare try to pass this in the middle of the night and then go on break. Slow down!

Six, growing government control. I want states rights and sovereignty fully restored. I want less government in my life, not more. Shrink it down. Mind your own business. You have enough to take care of with your real obligations. Why don’t you start there.

Seven, ACORN. I do not want ACORN and its affiliates in charge of our 2010 census. I want them investigated. I also do not want mandatory escrow fees contributed to them every time on every real estate deal that closes. Stop the funding to ACORN and its affiliates pending impartial audits and investigations. I do not trust them with taking the census over with our taxpayer money. I don’t trust them with our taxpayer money. Face up to the allegations against them and get it resolved before taxpayers get any more involved with them. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, hello. Stop protecting your political buddies. You work for us, the people. Investigate.

Eight, redistribution of wealth. No, no, no. I work for my money. It is mine. I have always worked for people with more money than I have because they gave me jobs. That is the only redistribution of wealth that I will support. I never got a job from a poor person. Why do you want me to hate my employers? Why ?? what do you have against shareholders making a profit?

Nine, charitable contributions. Although I never got a job from a poor person, I have helped many in need. Charity belongs in our local communities, where we know our needs best and can use our local talent and our local resources. Butt out, please. We want to do it ourselves.

Ten, corporate bailouts. Knock it off. Sink or swim like the rest of us. If there are hard times ahead, we’ll be better off just getting into it and letting the strong survive. Quick and painful. Have you ever ripped off a Band?Aid? We will pull together. Great things happen in America under great hardship. Give us the chance to innovate. We cannot disappoint you more than you have disappointed us.

Eleven, transparency and accountability. How about it? No, really, how about it? Let’s have it. Let’s say we give the buzzwords a rest and have some straight honest talk. Please try ?? please stop manipulating and trying to appease me with clever wording. I am not the idiot you obviously take me for. Stop sneaking around and meeting in back rooms making deals with your friends. It will only be a prelude to your criminal investigation. Stop hiding things from me.

Twelve, unprecedented quick spending. Stop it now.

Take a breath. Listen to the people. Let’s just slow down and get some input from some non-politicians on the subject. Stop making everything an emergency. Stop speed reading our bills into law.

I am not an activist. I am not a community organizer. Nor am I a terrorist, a militant or a violent person. I am a parent and a grandparent. I work. I’m busy. I’m busy. I am busy, and I am tired. I thought we elected competent people to take care of the business of government so that we could work, raise our families, pay our bills, have a little recreation, complain about taxes, endure our hardships, pursue our personal goals, cut our lawn, wash our cars on the weekends and be responsible contributing members of society and teach our children to be the same all while living in the home of the free and land of the brave.

I entrusted you with upholding the Constitution. I believed in the checks and balances to keep from getting far off course.

What happened?

You are very far off course. Do you really think I find humor in the hiring of a speed reader to unintelligently ramble all through a bill that you signed into law without knowing what it contained? I do not. It is a mockery of the responsibility I have entrusted to you. It is a slap in the face. I am not laughing at your arrogance.

Why is it that I feel as if you would not trust me to make a single decision about my own life and how I would live it but you should expect that I should trust you with the debt that you have laid on all of us and our children. We did not want the TARP bill. We said no. We would repeal it if we could. I am sure that we still cannot. There is such urgency and recklessness in all of the recent spending.

From my perspective, it seems that all of you have gone insane. I also know that I am far from alone in these feelings. Do you honestly feel that your current pursuits have merit to patriotic Americans? We want it to stop. We want to put the brakes on everything that is being rushed by us and forced upon us.

We want our voice back.

You have forced us to put our lives on hold to straighten out the mess that you are making. We will have to give up our vacations, our time spent with our children, any relaxation time we may have had and money we cannot afford to spend on you to bring our concerns to Washington.

Our president often knows all the right buzzword[s and the latest] is ‘unsustainable’. Well, no kidding! How many tens of thousands of dollars did the focus group cost to come up with that word? We don’t want your overpriced words.

Stop treating us like we’re morons.

We want all of you to stop focusing on your reelection and do the job we want done, not the job you want done or the job your party wants done. You work for us and at this rate I guarantee you—not for long—because we are coming.

We will be heard and we will be represented. You think we’re so busy with our lives that we will never come for you? We are the formerly silent majority, all of us who quietly work, pay taxes, obey the law, vote, save money, keep our noses to the grindstone and we are now looking up at you.

You have awakened us, the patriotic spirit so strong and so powerful that it had been sleeping too long. You have pushed us too far. Our numbers are great. They may surprise you. For every one of us who will be there, there will be hundreds more that could not come. Unlike you, we have their trust.

We will represent them honestly, rest assured. They will be at the polls on voting day to usher you out of office. We have cancelled vacations. We will use our last few dollars saved. We will find the representation among us and a grassroots campaign will flourish.

We didn’t ask for this fight. But the gloves are coming off. We do not come in violence, but we are angry. You will represent us or you will be replaced with someone who will. There are candidates among us when hewill rise like a Phoenix from the ashes that you have made of our constitution.

Democrat, Republican, independent, libertarian. Understand this. We don’t care. Political parties are meaningless to us. Patriotic Americans are willing to do right by us and our Constitution and that is all that matters to us now.

We are going to fire all of you who abuse power and seek more. It is not your power. It is ours and we want it back.

We entrusted you with it and you abused it. You are dishonorable. You are dishonest. As Americans we are ashamed of you. You have brought shame to us. If you are not representing the wants and needs of your constituency loudly and consistently, in spite of the objections of your party, you will be fired.

Did you hear? We no longer care about your political parties. You need to be loyal to us, not to them. Because we will get you fired and they will not save you.

If you do or can represent me, my issues, my views, please stand up. Make your identity known. You need to make some noise about it. Speak up. I need to know who you are.

If you do not speak up, you will be herded out with the rest of the sheep and we will replace the whole damn congress if need be one by one.

We are coming. Are we coming for you? Who do you represent? What do you represent? Listen. Because we are coming.

We the people are coming.

* Update* This letter also has quite a following and a petition you can sign ..you can see more here. (H/T to John at rightwing.net)

The Muse tangles with TN’S Left.

June 18th, 2009 by TNM

There’s a bro-ha-ha going across the TN blog-o-sphere, that’s even as I write this being pushed to the National Level.

Blue Collar Muse, linked in my side bar, and one of my daily reads has the details.

Let me state clearly, I’ve read the BCM blog for a long time, Ken is a good guy, he posts some hard hitting stuff and he asks tough questions. In short he is a class act.

True to form, liberals are coming out of the woodwork to attack him, but frankly….The liberals attacking him are out gunned, out classed, and out maneuvered. The attacks he took from the TN liberal bloggers on this were handled with grace and dignity. My hat’s off to him. I don’t know if I could wade through the liberal attacks and BS with as much class.

Anyhow, Long story, short, A TN GOP staffer sent out an E-mail with a “racist” image depicting all former U.S. Presidents, with the last one being Barak Obama with only a pair of eye visible on a black back ground.
The left went ballistic, and many have called for the staffer to be fired.

Ironically, Not long after this incident, yet Another government staffer this time working in a TN democrat’s office put out an E-mail demeaning Asians, and other stupid pictures making light of child abuse, and the mentality challenged, and BCM wanted to know why the Liberals were not quite as ready to grab the pitchforks and torches.
It’s a fair question. Strangely the liberals that came after BCM skirted the issue and instead attempted to paint the obvious hypocrisy as one liberal put it “False equivocation.”

Maybe as a white TN conservative, my “Neanderthal” brain is a little slow, I had to think for a second when I saw the image for the first time, “what’s the point?” Then it dawned on me, “Ohhhhhh I get it, Obama is Black, supposedly you can’t see him in the dark.” And then my brain short circuited again and I thought, “Cripes this is stupid.”

And it is. It’s stupidity of epic measures. Did I find it racist? No more than I find the fact that the same people screaming endlessly about race, will turn around every-time, without fail, and call a white person “cracker” “hillbilly” or “redneck”.

I guess it depends on your level of “tolerance” as to if you find something of this nature “racist” or like me just plain stupid and useless.

I’m sure a liberal white, or blacks reading this post will lambaste me for failing to understand the “nuances” of being an African-American in today’s world, accuse me of being “insensitive”, or just flat out call me a “racist”. But then it is a tactic of the PC crowd to do that when they can’t reasonably debate the issues of race in America without going into emotional spasms. Okay you win, it’s ‘racist”. Fine, happy now?

But in the same vein, liberals go absolutely stark raving mad over this picture, and on the other hand a clearly racist statement gets a pass….Take for example Megan Fox’s recent comments, about if she had the chance to negotiate with Megatron (I’m assuming this is some villain in one of her latest screen appearances.) on the destruction of the world said: ”

“I think I would make a deal with him and say instead of the entire planet, can you just take out all of the white trash, hillbilly, anti-gay, super bible-beating people in Middle America?”

Implication here is some untold White millions of Americans in “middle America” are white trash. We’re not good enough, we’re so much dirt under Ms. Fox’s and other liberals feet, and our very existence offends her because we’re all a bunch of hick racists.

How she asserts that is not really known, I would love to ask her where she drew the conclusions and how she can speak with such self assured determination that this is how Middle America truly is.

At first If you’re if the same mindset as me you dismiss this immediately as a child throwing a fit, another over-paid, over sexed, chemically enhanced  Hollywood Starlet that is as so many of them are prone to do, shooting her mouth off without putting her mind in gear.  But when you look at it closer, that is precisely the problem with race in America. Very few seem to be able to approach race with any sort of level minded thought process, especially liberals like Fox who live a life dominated with emotion and fantasy rather than reason.

Where’s the outrage from the liberals attacking BCM? I looked long and hard a not one peep on Ms. Fox’s comments could I find, Why is it liberals can not at least be honest about it and say “we hate white people”? Why does Megan Fox get a pass from the left?

I know… when a nutty liberal like Fox attacks other whites that’s ok? Sort of like two black men calling each other “nigger” ..that isnt’ “racist” because they are blacks, so Megan can’t be a racist because shes’ attacking her own race, so that makes it “okay”?

Huh? Whoever the hell came up with this ROE, they need to get a clue.

Fact of the matter is; The issue of race in America is overlyconvoluted and continues to get blown out of proportion by the left. It’s like an open festering sore that liberals just can’t let heal, they scratch and dig at it endlessly and I fail to see what purpose, or productivity is gained in it.

As Rodney King quipped “Why can’t we all just get a long?’ That is the million dollar question and as long as there is so much emotional baggage tied to it, as long as white liberals keep pounding the white guilt / race drum it will not get any better, it will continue to degrade into Black v White, V Hispanic V Asian, V Arab, V etc etc etc.

Playing Gotcha !

The liberal blogs I saw linked over at BCM, and visited to read their comments concerning this issue, overwhelming have gone out of their way to promote this. It’s the classic Gotcha! Power play by liberals that is all so common in America today.

This too defeats any meaningful purpose, but it’s a well used tactic by these people to keep the race sore festering. The question is why?

Frankly, because I mostly fail at wrapping my head around any liberal’s thought process, I don’t have the answer to that either. Power Perhaps?

I think that’s a fair assertion, it’s all about the liberals controlling the debate on race.

Need proof? As one liberal poster that attacked BCM said:

blue collar mucus…..

Yep, you’re right. I assumed you were a Centrist because I didn’t think LWC or ‘coma would post to a Right Wing Scumbag’s site.

Joke’s on me. And you’re the joke.

Why don’t you man up and admit that you conservanoid shitbirds are the losers we always said you were?
And I wasn’t all wrong after all, was I?
You’re still too stupid to differentiate between Left and Democrat.

But hey, by all means continue your little electronic loserfest. Because we “the Left” have you under foot where all your ilk belong. And that is where you will stay thanx to sub-humans like Goforth.

Nice, don’t you think?

I’ve got news for this fellow Tennessean, you try to put a “foot” literally or figuratively on me, you’ll come back with a bloody stump and your balls a fond memory. No I am not kidding. You can tout your liberal mantra all you wish, you can scream from the roof tops about racist rednecks and hillbillies, you can hate yourself because you were born the wrong color, but if you come near me with that crap, if you even dream of trying of putting me “under your foot” you and anyone else on the “left” are in for a very nasty fight. Pack a lunch, because it’s going to be a long day, trust me.

That’s not the only low brow comment I noted of that sort, the liberal blogs are teeming with them, and it’s nothing short of ugly, hypocritical, and completely counter productive.

Again I need to ask why? What is the purpose? From where I sit there is none, well other than imposing their impossibly hypocritical PC belief system on those they don’t deem ‘enlightened’ enough.

Sorry, I will not submit. I must be a racist.

The fall of GM

June 7th, 2009 by TNM

I guess it has all been said, the talking heads, the government, the conservatives the liberals the GOP the DNC all have stated their positions and all have decided who is right or wrong, who wins and who looses in the GM collapse.

So I will only post something I wrote on another forum, something that I think shows the human side of what the fall of GM means.

So what’s this I hear concerning the people that worked for GM?

It’s not fair! Society owes these workers! We need to help them!!…

Wait; hold on one second there…not so fast.

While that may in fact be a noble idea, I’ll say it again; the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I’m going to tell you a story about one of those 70+ year old workers. A retiree from GM.

I haven’t spoken to my father about the GM crisis, he’s in frail health these days and I try to avoid upsetting him. But I’m fairly confident that even if his GM pension goes away, he’ll be just fine. My Dad is 76. He retired from the GM Lordstown plant in OH some years ago.

I did ask Mom about how it was going to affect them and she said he lost his vision and dental coverage and a small amount of their monthly check, strikingly enough, Mom said “Thank God it wasn’t worse, they are going to keep Lordstown Open, this area couldn’t make it with out that plant”, so I would wager that’s a pretty standard across the board cut for any “legacy” GM employee that is drawing a pension.

So before I start, lets dispense with the vision of retirees being wiped out, tossed out in the harsh Midwest winters and eating Alpo shall we? Because that’s not what seems to be happening. Far from it.

A little history is in order before I begin.
My Father lost a major portion of his company pension in 1979 when after 19+ years of working for them, US Steel folded under pressure from Japanese Imports, much like the same situation we see today with GM the UAW, The USW and heavy handed government killed domestic steel. Them and the EPA. What did him and Mom do? Mind you in 1979 They had just bought a new home, and had two kids in school I was in the 7th or 8th grade.

Mom went to work to help put food on the table Dad got unemployment benefits, and did plumbing work on the side where he could find it.

They took the pittance that US Steel “bought” the Steelworkers out for, added that to their savings, and stroked a check to pay off the house we lived in.

I sat there and watched my Dad do it, and the sadness in his eyes was unmistakable, but he simply said, “well thank god it’s there on a rainy day”.

I remember there was unrest at the union hall, and things got dangerous at the plant, Being too young, I never understood the reason for the USW riots until Dad one day explained it to me when I asked him years later, the pension plans had been treated a lot like Social Security, the money used for other things, and when the company pulled the plug…. the workers were left with almost nothing. The company blamed the Union the Union blamed the Company, and no one ever really did to my knowledge figure out where or who the money went to, Organized Crime was pretty big in Youngstown those days, so I’m sure there were problems there.

A Master Pipefitter III, when US Steel shut down, and for a long 18 months he was out of work. Think things are bad now? As the President quipped the other day, “you ain’t seen nothing yet”, try Unemployment figures of 15+ percent, and inflation just as high, welcome to the steel valley of Ohio in 1979. The “Rust Belt” was born.

GM finally picked him up after the economy started turning around under Regan, to which he gave them another 20+ years and retired some years ago, him and Mom are comfortable in the same house I grew up in although that house now is worth quite a bit more than what was paid for it, and quite a bit larger because of renovations, he never once considered selling it.

Nor did Dad ever consider a new flashy car, or what the neighbor was driving. Oh I’m sure he looked on with a little envy when the guy across the street would pull his Vette out and wash it, but He simply drove his Oldsmobile Cutlass wagon, dang near until the wheels fell off, literally, he was still driving that wreck when I was in HS and I remember doing the front suspension on it for him because it wouldn’t keep alignment.

Correction, There was an extravagance, one time. Dad plunked down the money on a used 1977 Caddy Eldorado, He paid 4500.00 for it. My Mom’s boss was trading up to a Deville, and Dad snapped the car up because the dealer wouldn’t give the man the money he wanted on trade in. It sat in the garage more than anyplace, then That car turned out to be my car several years later when I joined the Navy. I bet I was the only E-2 in the world tooling around in a big old fancy boat like that, on my salary…I couldn’t afford to drive it much even, it sat on the base mostly. But I digress.

In the early 80’s not too long after Dad went to work for GM I can remember a phone call one evening, a man on the line asking to speak to my father, and me handing the phone to him. I remember being exasperated because my girlfriend was supposed to call…

The man was from the UAW, and Dad had been noticed, he was what they were looking for in a management type, He needed to move up and reward his family and himself is what the man told my dad.
Dad said this to my Mom, she didn’t say much but I am sure they spent a long time talking about it afterward, and I think it took a while for him to make a choice.

My Dad never made that move, and years later I asked him why, turns out, he hated the Union, The Steelworker fiasco had left a bitter taste in his mouth, he had to work and pay dues under their thumb just like any one else but he absolutely despised the UAW. So he stuck by his principles and he turned down the UAW’s overtures.

So how did Dad do it? How did he survive the almost total loss of one pension and still make it through the GM collapse as well?

Lucky in the market? Nope, never bought a stock in his life that I know of.

Made his move into management with the rest of the “fat cat lame and lazy (expletive deleted)ers”? (His words one night after maybe one or two beers past his normal) Nope, he retired a blue collar type and was one all his life.

Got some hotshot Whizkid finance broker guru doing an investment portfolio? Nope, Don’t think he even ever had a 401k come to think of it.

Win the lottery? Nope, Dad never gambled a day in his life other than maybe a nickle or two playing poker with friends.

Rich Relative die? Nope, out of 10 bothers and sisters Dad is by far the most successful in fact I remember family feuds periodically this one mad at dad for not helping so and so, or this one not talking to Dad because he was “uppity”, I kid not.

So How’d he do it?

Simple, Dad started working 66 years ago at the age of 10 hauling tin cans to the mills, and he never stopped working until he was 65.

He’s been blown off of blast furnaces in accidents, scalded with steam, his hands are crisscrossed with scars, and his legs now weak from the years of abuse. But he never took a sick day that I can remember. I can remember him coming home from the mills blowing black crud out of his nose, his face streaked with sweat and his hands bleeding from one cut or the other. Or the time he lost a friend who fell into a vat of molten steel, or the friend the fished out of the Mahoning River, he lost control of his car on an icy road, and was killed on impact. Lot’s of funerals for those Steelworkers it seemed like.

I can remember being very young and I’d sit on the front stoop (we lived in the inner city in those years) and wait for his Bronze Plymouth Fury III to come growling down the street, It had a pretty hot 360 in it and I was 6, and thus started my love affairs with cars.

He went to the Mills as a laborer when he was in the 9th grade back then I guess you could do that sort of thing, and the mills taught him a trade.

I can remember him pouring over complex blue prints, and diagrams, drawing them out from memory, stacks of books and manuals night after night studying for one test or another to get his Master Pipe Fitter certifications. Mom had to help him learn to read and used to lord over him because his writing was so much “chicken scratch I can’t make head or tail of this HONESTLY James, Really…!! ” She’d huff. And he’d not say a word, he’d just go back to work and do it better.

I never got a lot of mail from my Dad in the Navy he wasn’t the writing type, like I am apparently(!!) But the few lines I would get once in a blue moon would make me smile, those letters were written in pain staking block letters perfectly spaced, even, and perfectly legible. I’d remember my Mom hounding him about his “chicken scratch”.

I can remember Christmases on hold, “Wait”, Mom would say,in that tone that brooked no argument lest you wanted a good whack, “Dad’s working late at the plant, he’ll be here soon” Pure Torture to a 8 yr old kid with a stack of presents under the tree , and it shames me now to think of how angry I would feel, at that “stupid plant” let me tell you. I never thought to consider where those presents came from, how much OT may Old man had to put in at that “stupid plant” to get them for us. He wasn’t working ‘late” he was working a double for the Time and a half he would get.

I never once remember them using Credit cards, or taking out loans to do anything they wanted to do, it was always cash.

I can remember not a lot of extras growing up, but it was a good solid life, and being taught the importance of saving your money, and working hard.

I know there were some investments into IRA’s and CD’S how much I have no idea, but that’s all I know of, nothing risky, nothing flamboyant.

Just living within their means, saving money for rainy days, working when it would have been easy to just say the heck with it, and taking the personal responsibility for his life, and his families life. He to this day is the same way.

So do I agree that “we the taxpayers owe something” to these “retirees” that are having problems because of GM’S fall? Unless there are very strong mitigating circumstances such as a devastating illness, work related injury, or other very acute reasoning, No I do not.

Now what I am going to write will really set peoples hair on fire, but my father is a dying breed, workers today be they non union or union only want what they can get out their jobs monetarily and as much of it as they can get, more if they can do it and not get caught.

That dogged determination of my fathers era is gone, that perseverance that vision for the future is gone, tell me, if it still exists why are these people in the shape they are in after 20 years of working for GM? Is it GM’s fault? I don’t think so.

20 years of Making well above average wages, and with great Benefits, did they save, invest and try to look towards the future? Nope. But I’m willing to Bet there’s a lot of Boats, and cars, motorcycles and houses and who knows what else getting taken back by the banks in Detroit right now, but then again my dad never had a boat, go figure.

I’d say more than a small majority of them got the cushy Union Job, didn’t have to strive to better themselves as long as the UAW had their back and so they never did. Like Millions of their countrymen with the sub-prime debacle they lived far, far beyond their means and beyond responsibility, it really is that simple.

Why is that? Hmmm? Maybe it’s Because they wanted GM to do it all for them, they wanted something for nothing, the money train was never going to stop, or so they and the UAW thought, and they kept right on spending.

Come to think of it, Need proof? Did the UAW sell off that golf course yet? You know the one up there in MI I think it has some sort of 80 MILLION dollar price tag attached to it? No?
Well then A GM retiree isn’t getting on god dog darn cent from me until that golf course for the UAW fat cats is turned to a parking lot, all 300 acres of it!!

In the end, They failed to take any active role in their own lives, they gambled it all on the future they thought would be there, & they lost, I’m sorry the GM my father knew is gone now, but do I feel I owe someone that had the same chance as my father did? Yet that person can’t make it now?

Sorry I don’t.

It’s called personal responsibility.
